Cost Per Round by Caliber: What the Ratios Actually Look Like

Most "cost per caliber" articles quote current retail prices. Those are stale within a quarter and wrong in your region anyway.

What survives is the ratio between calibers. If .223 costs you about twice what 9mm does, that stays roughly true whether you are buying in Frankfurt or Phoenix, and it is the number you can actually plan a training year around. Where these numbers come from

Not market research. These are logged purchases from one shooter's inventory, recorded at the time of buying: date, manufacturer, quantity, total paid.

Read the disclosure before the numbers: these purchases were made in Europe and paid in euros. The absolute figures will not match US retail, and they are not meant to. What transfers is the relationship between the two calibers, and that is what this article argues about.

The ratio: .223 costs almost exactly 2x what 9mm does per round.


Why the ratio is the useful number

Take a realistic training year: 3,600 rounds of pistol at 150 rounds every two weeks.

At the 9mm rate that is roughly 800 currency units of ammo. Shoot the same volume in .223 and it is 1,600. The doubling holds regardless of which currency you put in front of it, and regardless of whether prices rose or fell that year.

That makes the ratio a planning tool in a way absolute prices never are:

  • Volume drills belong in the cheap caliber. Doubling the per-round cost halves the number of repetitions you get for the same budget.
  • Rifle practice needs a different plan. Not less practice — fewer, more deliberate rounds, or a rimfire trainer for the volume portion.
  • A "good deal" on the expensive caliber saves twice as much per round. Ten percent off .223 is worth twice what ten percent off 9mm is.

The two calibers moved in opposite directions

This is the part that surprised us. Over the same period, with the same shooter:

  • 9x19: average per round trending down
  • .223 Rem: trending up

The explanation is not the market. It is buying behaviour. The 9mm was bought three times with increasing order sizes — 550, then 1,000, then 2,000 rounds — and the per-round price fell with each step. The .223 was bought once, in a single 1,000 round order, with nothing to average against.

The cleanest evidence in the data is within a single manufacturer: 1,000 rounds at €0.239 versus 2,000 rounds at €0.203. Same brand, double the quantity, 15% cheaper per round.

So "ammo prices are going up" turned out to be false for one caliber and true for the other, in the same cabinet, in the same year. That is not a market observation. It is an observation about how each caliber happened to be purchased — and you can only see it if the purchases are recorded separately.


Working out your own ratios

You need very little:

  1. Every purchase as its own entry — date, caliber, manufacturer, quantity, total paid, shipping
  2. Cost per round to three decimals(total + shipping) / quantity
  3. A weighted average per caliber — total spent divided by total rounds, not the average of the per-purchase prices

That third point catches people out. Averaging 0.273 and 0.203 gives 0.238. Weighting them by quantity gives 0.224, because the cheaper purchase was four times larger. The weighted figure is the one that reflects what you actually paid.

What these numbers do not tell you

  • They are not market prices. One shooter, European retailers, euros. Use the ratio, not the figures.
  • The .223 line is a single purchase. One data point has no trend, and calling it "rising" is a description of the app's average, not a market claim.
  • Two calibers is not a survey. .308, .22 LR and shotgun would each behave differently, and we do not have documented data for them.
