How Much Ammo Should I Stockpile? Work It Out From Your Own Usage

Ask this question anywhere and you will get numbers: a thousand rounds per caliber, five thousand, "as much as you can afford".

None of them are answers, because none of them know how much you shoot. A competitive pistol shooter burns through 1,000 rounds in about seven weeks. Someone who shoots twice a year has a decade of ammunition in the same box. AmmoKeep is built by shooters, for shooters, and this is the arithmetic we use ourselves.


The method in one line

Stockpile = monthly consumption × desired runway in months

Everything below is about getting those two inputs right and adding one safety margin.


Input 1: your actual monthly consumption

Not what you think you shoot. What the log says.

A common rhythm looks like this:

  • 150 rounds every two weeks
  • ≈ 300 rounds a month
  • ≈ 3,600 rounds a year

If you do not have a log yet, this is the point at which you cannot answer the question, and no article can answer it for you. Two or three months of recording rounds per session gets you a real average — and if you want it on paper first, the free range log template has the fields.

One caveat: use a rolling average over several months, not last month. Training volume is seasonal almost everywhere — indoor winters, match seasons, hunting seasons — and a single month will mislead you in whichever direction it happens to lean.


Input 2: how much runway you want

This is a judgement call, not a calculation, but the sensible range is narrower than the internet suggests. Three things push it up or down:

Supply reliability. Ammunition supply has been visibly volatile. If a caliber has been hard to find in your area, longer runway.

Price behaviour. Buying in larger batches lowers your cost per round — in our own documented purchases, doubling the order size cut about 15% off the per-round price. Longer runway means larger batches means a lower average price.

Storage and capital. Two hard limits. What you cannot store securely, you cannot keep. And ammunition on a shelf is money not doing anything else.

Six months is a defensible default for a regular shooter. Twelve if the caliber is hard to source. Less than three and you will be buying at whatever the price happens to be that week, which is the expensive way to do it.


Worked example

At 300 rounds a month:

So for a six month runway, roughly 1,800 rounds. Which is a completely different answer than the same calculation for someone shooting 40 rounds a month — 240 rounds — even though both shooters would be handed "a thousand rounds minimum" by the same forum thread.


The number people forget: the reorder point

The stockpile figure is not what you act on day to day. This is:

Reorder point = monthly consumption × delivery time in months + buffer

At 300 rounds a month with delivery running two to three weeks, plus a buffer for a sale that has not shown up yet:

Reorder at around 600 rounds remaining.

The reorder point is what turns stock management from reactive to deliberate. Below it you are buying at the current price because you have to. Above it you are waiting for a good offer — and that is where most of the savings actually come from, not from finding the perfect stockpile number.


Per caliber, never in total

One aggregate stockpile number across all your calibers is not usable.

A shooter running 9mm and .223 has completely different consumption in each — and in our documented data, roughly a 2:1 difference in cost per round on top of that. Running out of one while sitting on two years of the other is the normal failure mode, and a combined total hides it perfectly. The detail is in cost per round by caliber.

Consumption, runway and reorder point all belong per caliber. That is also why stock forecasts in the app are calculated per caliber rather than as one number.


Practical notes

  • Ammunition stores well if it is kept dry and at a stable temperature, so a longer runway is not a spoilage risk in the way people sometimes assume. More on that in does ammo go bad.
  • Rotate oldest first, which requires knowing which batch is oldest — one more reason purchases are worth recording individually.
  • Storage regulations and any purchase limits vary by jurisdiction. This article is about arithmetic, not law. Check what applies where you live.

Bottom line

There is no correct number of rounds, only a correct method: measure what you shoot, pick a runway you can store and afford, multiply, and set a reorder point at roughly one delivery cycle plus a buffer.

Do that and you stop guessing in both directions — no panic buying at the top of the market, and no capital sitting in a caliber you shoot twice a year.
